“Tell Me About Yourself”: A Simple Answer for Freshers (with Example)
"Tell me about yourself" is the first question in almost every job interview. Many freshers either say too little or repeat their whole resume. Here is a simple 4-part structure, a sample answer, and the mistakes to avoid.
The 4-part structure
| Part | What to say |
|---|---|
| 1. Who you are | Your name and where you are from.
| 2. Your education | Your degree, college and one achievement or project.
| 3. Your strengths | 2–3 strengths or skills, with a small example.
| 4. Why this job | Why you want this role and this company.
Keep it to about one minute (around 120–150 words).
Sample answer (fresher, B.Com)
"Good morning. My name is Divya, and I'm from Madurai. I recently completed my B.Com with 78 percent. In my final year, I did a two-month internship in accounts, where I learned to use Tally and Excel for daily entries.
My strengths are that I learn quickly, I'm well organised, and I work well in a team. During my internship, I helped my team finish the month-end reports two days early.
I'm applying for this role because I want to start my career in accounts, and your company is known for training freshers well. I'm keen to learn and grow here. Thank you."
Change the details to match your degree, skills and the job you are applying for. Never memorise someone else's answer word for word.

Mistakes to avoid
- ❌ "Myself Divya." ✅ Say "My name is Divya" or "I'm Divya."
- ❌ Talking about your family for a long time ("My father is…, my mother is…"). One line is enough, or skip it.
- ❌ Repeating every line of your resume. The interviewer already has it.
- ❌ Saying "I am a hard worker" without an example. Add one small proof.
- ❌ Ending with "That's all." ✅ End with why you want this job, then "Thank you."
How to practise
- Write your own answer using the 4 parts.
- Say it aloud and record it on your phone. Listen once and improve.
- Practise until you can say it naturally in about one minute, without reading.
