At the hospital or clinic, you want to explain the problem clearly, for yourself or your child, and understand what the doctor says. You don't need medical words. These simple sentences will help you at the reception, with the doctor and at the pharmacy, with meanings in Tamil, Telugu and Hindi.

5 common mistakes

❌ Don't say✅ Say
I am having fever.I have a fever.
My head is paining.I have a headache. / My head hurts.
My stomach is paining.I have a stomach ache. / My stomach hurts.
He is having cold.He has a cold.
Doctor, give tablet.Could you prescribe something for this, please?

"pain" என்பதை வினைச்சொல்லாக "is paining" என்று பயன்படுத்துவது தவறு. "hurts" அல்லது "I have a … ache" என்று சொல்லுங்கள். நோயைக் குறிக்கும்போது "have" பயன்படுத்துங்கள், "am having" அல்ல.'pain' ను క్రియగా 'is paining' అని వాడటం తప్పు. 'hurts' లేదా 'I have a … ache' అని చెప్పండి. అనారోగ్యం గురించి చెప్పేటప్పుడు 'am having' కాదు, 'have' వాడండి.'pain' को क्रिया की तरह 'is paining' कहना गलत है। 'hurts' या 'I have a … ache' कहें। बीमारी बताते समय 'am having' नहीं, 'have' कहें।

A short conversation you can practise

Doctor: Good morning. What's the problem?
You: Good morning, doctor. My daughter has had a fever since yesterday, and she has a bad cough.
Doctor: Is she eating properly?
You: Not really. She's very tired.
Doctor: I'll give her some syrup. Two times a day, after food.
You: Thank you, doctor. When should we come back?
Doctor: If the fever doesn't go down in three days, come back.

Practise this with a family member, once as the doctor and once as the parent. Next time you visit a clinic, try to say the first sentence in English yourself.
