Group Discussion (GD) Phrases: How to Start, Agree, Disagree and Sum Up

Jhansi D MohanBy Jhansi D Mohan, English & Communication Coach · 10 October 2026

Meanings in:

In a group discussion (GD), the students who get selected are not always the ones with the best English. They are the ones who speak clearly, politely and at the right time. These simple phrases will help you start the discussion, agree, disagree, add points and sum up, with meanings in Tamil, Telugu and Hindi.

Starting the discussion

Englishதமிழில்తెలుగులోहिंदी में
Good morning, everyone. May I start the discussion?
Today's topic is very important for all of us.
I'd like to begin by looking at both sides.

Giving your opinion

Englishதமிழில்తెలుగులోहिंदी में
In my opinion, …
I strongly believe that ……
For example, in our college, …

Agreeing and disagreeing politely

Englishதமிழில்తెలుగులోहिंदी में
I agree with Karthik, and I'd like to add one point.
That's a good point, but I see it differently.
I respect your view, but I'm not sure I agree.

Tip: disagree with the idea, never the person. Start with something positive ("That's a good point, but…") and stay calm. Examiners notice this.

Entering the discussion and including others

Englishதமிழில்తెలుగులోहिंदी में
Sorry to interrupt, but may I add something?
Let me finish my point, please.
Divya, we haven't heard from you yet. What do you think?

Summing up

Englishதமிழில்తెలుగులోहिंदी में
To sum up, we discussed both the benefits and the problems.
Most of us agree that …

5 common GD mistakes

❌ Don't say✅ Say
I am agree with you.I agree with you.
According to me, …In my opinion, … / I think …
I want to tell one point.I'd like to add a point.
Same like Karthik said, …As Karthik said, …
You are wrong.I see it differently. / I'm not sure I agree.

"You are wrong" என்பது கடுமையாகத் தெரியும்; "I see it differently" என்று மென்மையாகச் சொல்லுங்கள்.'agree' ఒక క్రియ, కాబట్టి 'am' అవసరం లేదు: 'I agree'. 'You are wrong' కటువుగా అనిపిస్తుంది; 'I see it differently' అని మృదువుగా చెప్పండి.'agree' एक क्रिया है, इसलिए 'am' की ज़रूरत नहीं: 'I agree'। 'You are wrong' कठोर लगता है; 'I see it differently' कहकर नरमी से बात रखें।

A sample opening you can use

Topic: Should mobile phones be allowed in college?

"Good morning, everyone. May I start the discussion? Today's topic is very important for all of us, because we use our phones every day. I'd like to begin by looking at both sides. On one hand, phones help us find information and stay in touch. On the other hand, they can distract us in class. In my opinion, phones should be allowed, but with clear rules. I'd like to hear what others think."

A good GD opening is about 30 seconds: greet, introduce the topic, show both sides, give your view, and invite others. Practise it with 2–3 friends on a new topic each week.
