Meanings in:

Speaking English with your children at home is one of the best ways for both of you to improve. You don't need long speeches. Short, everyday sentences, used again and again, work best. Here are simple sentences for the morning, homework, meals and bedtime, with meanings in Tamil, Telugu and Hindi.

Tip: if you have a daughter, change he / him / his to she / her / her. Most of these sentences work for both.

Words of praise

Children love to hear these, and they're easy to say every day:

  • Well done! (நன்றாகச் செய்தாய்!)(బాగా చేశావు!)(बहुत बढ़िया!)
  • I'm proud of you. (உன்னை நினைத்துப் பெருமைப்படுகிறேன்.)(నిన్ను చూసి గర్వంగా ఉంది.)(मुझे तुम पर गर्व है।)
  • Good try! Let's do it again. (நல்ல முயற்சி! மீண்டும் செய்வோம்.)(మంచి ప్రయత్నం! మళ్లీ చేద్దాం.)(अच्छी कोशिश! फिर से करते हैं।)

5 common mistakes at home

❌ Don't say✅ Say
On the light. / Off the fan.Switch on the light. / Switch off the fan.
Close the TV.Switch off the TV. / Turn off the TV.
Do fast.Hurry up. / Be quick.
Where you are going?Where are you going?
Don't do like that.Don't do that. / Please don't do it that way.

"on", "off" தனியாக வினைச்சொல் அல்ல. "Switch on", "Switch off" என்று சொல்ல வேண்டும். கேள்வியில் "are" முதலில் வர வேண்டும்: "Where are you going?"'on', 'off' ఒంటరిగా క్రియలు కావు. 'Switch on', 'Switch off' అని చెప్పాలి. ప్రశ్నలో 'are' ముందు రావాలి: 'Where are you going?''on' और 'off' अकेले क्रिया नहीं हैं। 'Switch on', 'Switch off' कहें। सवाल में 'are' पहले आता है: 'Where are you going?'

How to practise

  1. Choose one part of the day (for example, the morning) and use only English sentences for that time this week.
  2. Write the sentences on a small paper and stick it on the fridge.
  3. Next week, add another part of the day. In a month, you'll be speaking English at home every day, naturally.

Don't worry about small mistakes. Your children will enjoy learning with you.
