13 English Sentences for Your Child’s Parent-Teacher Meeting (PTM)

Parent-teacher meetings (PTMs) can feel stressful when you have to speak in English. The good news: you only need a few simple sentences. Here are 13 polite, natural sentences you can use at your next PTM, with meanings in Tamil, Telugu and Hindi.

Tip: if you have a daughter, change he / him / his to she / her / her.

1. Greeting the teacher

2. Asking how your child is doing

3. Asking for advice

4. Ending the meeting politely

If you didn't understand something

It is completely fine to ask the teacher to repeat. Teachers appreciate parents who listen carefully.

  • "Sorry, could you please repeat that?" (மன்னிக்கவும், மீண்டும் சொல்ல முடியுமா?)(క్షమించండి, మళ్లీ చెప్పగలరా?)(माफ़ कीजिए, क्या आप दोबारा बता सकती हैं?)
  • "Could you please speak a little slowly?" (கொஞ்சம் மெதுவாகப் பேச முடியுமா?)(కొంచెం నెమ్మదిగా మాట్లాడగలరా?)(क्या आप थोड़ा धीरे बोल सकती हैं?)

How to practise

  1. Read each sentence aloud three times, with your child's name.
  2. Choose the 4–5 sentences you will really use and write them on a small paper.
  3. Practise with a family member playing the teacher.
