Small Talk at Work: Easy English for Tea Breaks, Lunch and the Lift

Meanings in:

Many working women are confident in their work but go quiet during tea breaks, at lunch or in the lift, because they're not sure what to say in English. Small talk is short, friendly and simple, and it helps you build good relationships at work. Here are easy phrases to start, continue and end a friendly chat, with meanings in Tamil, Telugu and Hindi.

Greeting colleagues

Easy topics to talk about

Tip: ask an easy question, then listen and ask one follow-up ("Oh nice, where did you go?"). That's all small talk is.

Showing interest and giving compliments

Ending the conversation politely

5 common mistakes

கடந்த காலக் கேள்விகளில் "did" சேர்க்க வேண்டும்: "Where did you go?" "good name" என்பது நேரடி மொழிபெயர்ப்பு; ஆங்கிலத்தில் "What's your name?" என்றே கேட்கப்படுகிறது.గత కాలపు ప్రశ్నల్లో 'did' చేర్చాలి: 'Where did you go?' 'good name' అనేది నేరుగా అనువాదం; ఇంగ్లీష్‌లో 'What's your name?' అనే అడుగుతారు.भूतकाल के सवालों में 'did' लगाएँ: 'Where did you go?' 'good name' सीधा अनुवाद है; अंग्रेज़ी में 'What's your name?' ही पूछा जाता है।

A tea-break chat you can practise

You: Hi Meena! How's your week going?
Meena: Busy, but good. How about you?
You: Same here! Did you do anything special at the weekend?
Meena: We went to Mahabalipuram with the kids.
You: That sounds lovely! Was it very crowded?
Meena: A little, but the kids loved it.
You: Nice! Anyway, I'd better get back to work. Nice talking to you!

Try one small chat in English this week, even just two or three lines. Each chat makes the next one easier.
